Mindset Monday: Stop Waiting to Feel Ready

Many delay action until they feel ready, believing certainty precedes growth. However, true confidence often develops through action, not before. Embrace uncertainty and take the first step, as progress requires participation, not perfection. Life’s opportunities arise from risks, and courage means prioritizing growth over fear. Start now, don’t wait.

One of the biggest lies we tell ourselves is this:

“I’ll start when I feel ready.”

We say it about changing careers.

Starting a business.

Getting healthier.

Having a difficult conversation.

Going back to school.

Investing.

Traveling.

Writing the book.

Taking the risk.

But readiness rarely arrives before action.

More often, confidence comes after we begin.

That is what makes growth uncomfortable.

We want certainty first.

We want guarantees.

We want proof that everything will work out before we take the first step.

Life almost never gives us that.

The people who move forward are not always the most confident people in the room.

They are often simply the people willing to act while they still have doubts.

Courage is not the absence of fear.

It is deciding that something matters more than the fear.

Think about almost every major transition in life.

No new parent feels completely prepared.

No entrepreneur knows exactly what will happen.

No student begins a challenging degree already knowing everything required to finish it.

No leader has every answer before accepting responsibility.

We grow into our responsibilities.

We learn through experience.

We become capable by doing things that once made us uncomfortable.

Waiting to feel ready can become a very convincing form of procrastination.

It sounds responsible.

It sounds cautious.

It sounds intelligent.

But sometimes “I’m not ready yet” really means:

“I’m afraid I might fail.”

And failure feels personal.

We worry about what other people will think.

We worry about wasting time.

We worry about making the wrong decision.

But avoiding every possibility of failure also means avoiding many possibilities for growth.

Some of life’s greatest opportunities begin with uncertainty.

The first step is often messy.

The first attempt may not work.

The first version probably won’t be perfect.

That’s okay.

Progress doesn’t require perfection.

It requires participation.

You have to get into the game.

You have to make the call.

Send the application.

Take the class.

Begin the workout.

Open the account.

Start writing.

Have the conversation.

Then adjust as you learn.

There is tremendous freedom in accepting that you do not need to know exactly how the entire journey will unfold.

You only need enough courage for the next step.

The path often becomes clearer once you’re moving.

And something else happens when you act despite uncertainty:

You begin collecting evidence that you can handle difficult things.

That evidence becomes confidence.

Confidence creates momentum.

Momentum creates growth.

Eventually, you look back at something that once terrified you and wonder why you waited so long.

There will always be another reason to delay.

Another concern.

Another unanswered question.

Another person telling you why something might not work.

If you require complete certainty before taking action, you could spend your entire life standing at the starting line.

So this week, stop asking:

“Do I feel ready?”

Ask a better question:

“What is the next reasonable step?”

Then take it.

You don’t have to see the entire staircase.

You just have to climb the next step.

Your future may not be waiting for you to become more confident.

It may simply be waiting for you to begin.
